Free Resources for Entrepreneurs

About Our Center

The Small Business Opportunity Center is a holistic small business accelerator and research center at Virginia Commonwealth University implemented by the VCU School of Business, da Vinci Center for Innovation, and the VCU Division of Community Engagement. Our free, supportive entrepreneurship program identifies high potential under-resourced entrepreneurs and we provide them with or direct them to the training and resources they need in their entrepreneurship ecosystem to launch and scale successful traded sector firms. We offer fall, spring, and on-demand small business training academies, student-led technical support, seed funding awards and pitch competitions--participation in which is merit-based and dependent upon completion of our training or certifications. We also offer a host of other training and information resources in partnership with state universities and colleges, key entrepreneurship support organizations, local governments, and state agencies across Virginia's interconnected East Coast regions. The program evolved from the award winning Minority Small Business Launch Center which was piloted at Virginia State, and was founded by the same professor.

In addition to small business training and support, our center develops government studies and societally relevant research on entrepreneurship useful to academics and practitioners seeking to understand, develop and implement programs that promote small business success and economic opportunity.  The SBOC seeks to foster ecosystem collaboration among entrepreneurship support organizations, government agencies, and even competing chambers and membership-based organizations for the benefit of all small business owners in the regions we serve. Our Center is committed to serving Virginians of all backgrounds who want to launch viable small businesses.

WHAT THE SMALL BUSINESS OPPORTUNITY
CENTER OFFERS

Our accelerator was created to increase the self-employment rate and the performance of early stage under-resourced entrepreneurs and their firms via a dedicated program which provides a comprehensive suite of entrepreneurship-facilitating resources and supportive services including:

STUDENT & FACULTY-LED TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE

Our program gives participants access to business support in key functional areas: marketing-planning, financial statement development, business plan writing, and social media to enable firms to save money on these services and survive their first 1-5 years.

ENTREPRENEURSHIP LAUNCH AND GROWTH CERTIFICATION TRAINING

Our program provides access to two certification programs—(1) The Business Launch Pad  certification course created by higher education entrepreneurship center founder, ecosystem builder, and entrepreneurship professor, Dr. Patrice Perry-Rivers; and (2) the Start-Up Virginia Entrepreneur Certificate Course

ACCESS TO CO-WORKING SPACE

Participants in our program have access to co-working space by appointment at our space at 1229 W. Broad Street in Richmond in the da Vinci Center, and at our various partners' locations.

INVESTOR, VENTURE CAPITAL, AND BANK FUNDING TRAINING

Our program partners with Lighthouse Networks, StartUp Virginia, SBDC Centers of Virginia, and our chamber partners to offer training sessions for entrepreneurs on identifying and securing investors, venture capital, and commercial funding.

REGIONAL ENTREPRENEURSHIP NETWORKING EVENTS

We host regional networking sessions featuring entrepreneurship support organizations and chambers to facilitate program participants connecting with resource partners and other entrepreneurs to build partnerships and grow their businesses.

TRAINING ON HOW TO DO BUSINESS WITH VIRGINIA AND NAVIGATE SBA PROGRAMS

We host government agency entrepreneurship resource training sessions where representatives from the Department of Small Business and Supplier Diversity and the Small Business Administration will train participants on how to access state and federal government resources.

ATTORNEY-LED INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY PROTECTION WORKSHOPS & LEGAL BUSINESS FORMATION COUNSELING

Attorneys provide entrepreneurs with intellectual property knowledge focused on when and how to obtain patents, trademarks, and copyrights; and with guidance on business formation to help under-resourced firms overcome costs associated with incorporation or forming LLC’s and enable them to establish structures that better protect their assets.

COLLEGE STUDENT INNOVATION AND ENTREPRENEURSHIP FELLOWSHIPS & CONSULTANCIES

College student entrepreneurs have the opportunity for small business consultancies and internships through which they are paired with actual small business owners to serve their needs and gain hands-on training working with small businesses on core aspects of operations.

HIGH SCHOOL YOUTH ENTREPRENEURSHIP TRAINING PROGRAMS

We provide youth entrepreneurship training for middle and high school students and partner with Entrepreneurship for All to offer our summer "CEO To Be" summer entrepreneurship immersion camp where urban and rural youth get hands on experiential learning in entrepreneurship for one week and get to pitch their idea to judges.

MEMBERSHIPS TO REGIONAL CHAMBERS OF COMMERCE AND ENTREPRENEUR PEER MENTORSHIP

Our program works with regional trade associations and chambers of commerce, including the Metropolitan Business League (MBL), black Brand, the Virginia Black Chamber of Commerce, the Northern Virginia Black Chamber, the Central Virginia African American Chamber, Virginia Minority Chambers, and the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce to provide reduced-fee memberships and/or networking and training opportunities for program participants.

PITCH COMPETITIONS TO GIVE ENTREPRENEURS THE CHANCE TO WIN SEED AND EXPANSION CAPITAL

We sponsor pitch competitions, host pitch prep sessions, and encourage enrollees to participate in partner pitch competitions to provide entrepreneurs we have trained with the opportunity to compete for funding for their businesses.

SCHEDULED ACCESS TO MAKER SPACE

We provide participants with access to product concept development technology, including 3-D printers, product development software, and small scale printing, craft and manufacturing technology for prototyping during scheduled time at our Center or with one of our resource partners.
